Why does the engine take oil?

Significant oil consumption is rarely a normal situation – in which case, as a rule, you are dealing with a malfunction. Do not underestimate any of them, because it can end fatally for the engine and your wallet. In a critical situation, it is possible to get cash for cars.

But what does it even mean when the engine “takes oil”? After all, it is enough to look at the operating instructions for the first passenger car that comes across to make sure that the rate is even a little more than half a liter for every 1000 km. So if the manufacturer himself allows such wear, then there is nothing to worry about!

Well, unfortunately, as a rule, there is. Automotive concerns can write whatever they like in the owner’s manual, and … they are happy to use this opportunity. Records of maximum oil consumption of 0.5-0.7 l / 1000 km are only intended to protect against customer claims.

Under “normal” conditions, the engine’s increased appetite for oil should be considered suspicious.

First cause for concern: The engine was not using up oil and suddenly started. However, before you start looking for a serious problem, consider whether you have changed your driving style. Maybe you have driven long distances and with full load, or often on short sections? In this case, a slight loss of oil usually does not indicate a malfunction. Maybe you took too long to change the oil, and the oil in the car engine is already used up or thinned out?

The next step is to look under the car, because large leaks can be seen on the ground.

The second reason for concern: the oil began to disappear immediately after the change. In this case, start by checking the filter housing because an inattentive mechanic may not have tightened it correctly. Often the reason, however, is different – poorly selected oil, because modern power units are very sensitive to its parameters. Golden Rule: When in doubt, check which oil grade the manufacturer recommends for your particular engine.

For an old engine, it is worth considering a special oil, including one that has sealing properties.

Every engine uses oil, but this appetite can be kept within reasonable limits. Correct operation, the correct choice of oil – failure to comply with the replacement deadlines – in such conditions, an engine without a factory defect (for example, rings, sealants) should be content at best … a drop of topping up. Engines “old” and sports are consumed much more willingly. Disappearing more liters per 1000 km? It is rather a symptom of a malfunction.
